Michael Smith’s Family Meals (giveaway)

You know we recently vacationed in P.E.I, a place where beloved Canadian Chef Michael Smith calls home. You can’t go far on the island without seeing his face in a bookstore window or on a poster.

I’m a big fan of Michael’s cookbooks, Fast Flavours is in regular rotation – and his latest, Family Meals, is right up my alley. In fact, it hasn’t left my kitchen since it arrived in the mail; that is entirely the point of the book.

With sections such as ‘Lunchbox & Snacks’, ‘ Cook Ahead’ and ‘Family Meals in Minutes’, it’s obvious Chef Michael is familiar with juggling the demands of a busy household and a career.  And while many family cookbooks deliver recipes to cook for your family, Chef Michael’s shows you how to have fun in the kitchen with your family. It’s a subject we love around here!

We gobbled up the nutmeg-scented Weekend Pancakes on a recent Saturday morning and I simmered a big batch of Sloppy Joes on my stove yesterday. Don’t ask me why, but I’ve never made sloppy Joes for my kids. “I think I’ll have another one.” said Noah, shyly, after making the first bun disappear in a twinkling.

The boys have pounced on Family Meals, too and we’ve bookmarked another  handful of dishes to make together: Rosemary Apple Braised Chicken, Broccoli Bacon Frittata and Cinnamon Oatmeal Cookies.

True to Penguin’s style, the recipes are easy to follow, the photos gorgeous, and the book is a joy to cook from.  Michael Smith’s Family Meals is available online at both Indigo and Amazon and I’m giving away two copies today!

  1. The family that smokes together stays together 🙂 Every 4th of July we all convene at the lake and start the BBQ (My Uncle running the show). Many hours later after a fun day in the water we eat the BBQ along with as many sides as you can imagine – a representation of each of the branches of the family. Here in NC it’s tradition and here to stay and I wouldn’t trade those times for anything.

  2. We always got the best turnout when it was Sunday roast chicken with whipped potatoes and homemade gravy. It was extra special in the fall when followed up with granny apple crisp and ice cream. Mmmm…

  3. Meals in our house bring family and ‘family’ together at any time of year. Whether it is a big pot of hearty homemade soup with homemade buns or beautiful strip loin steaks barbecued over charcoal (or propane) with fresh garden vegetables and a beautiful salad – life doesn’t get much better when you can share a great meal with those in your life.

  4. Our immediate family comes running to the table for Meatball Zucchini Stew, but what gets the whole family to the table is Turkey dinner, of course!

  5. What brings my family to the table is my Cottage Pie! Golden mashed potato crust with gravy bubbling around the edges…sweet, shelled peas and fresh corn kernels bursting with every bite! A good ‘ol family comfort meal!

  6. The meal that gets the family to the table is honestly either Thanksgiving or Christmas. We’re a bit spread out so the actual family arriving for a holiday is the best. Doesn’t matter what food is served because what counts it that we are together.

  7. My favorite meal as a child was my mother’s lasagna and it still brings the family, and also my little family, together today!

  8. I just smile when I think of the wonderful, simple comfort food from my childhood. My mother made the best meat loaf and my father loved it with her parsley potatoes. That’s where I learned that cooking really is love and comes from the heart:)

  9. My favorite meals are my mom’s homemade fish cakes with baked beans and I always love a great turkey dinner with all the fixings!
