28 Apple Recipes: the sweet and the savoury

When it comes to fall fruit in Quebec, apples reign supreme, from the early Jersey Mac to the late maturing Cortland.

A wide wooden bowl on my kitchen table holds an ever-rotating assortment of Honeycrisp and Sunrise – our favourites for munching – and the fridge drawer keeps Green Russets and Ginger Golds crisp for salads and slaws.

Local farms open their orchard gates and we are among the many Montrealers who flock through to pick apples. We make it an annual event, enjoy a picnic with the family amid the fall leaves, and stay until the sun dips and the children tire of running.

  1. This post is the perfect start to the weekend! Here in the Annapolis Valley, NS, our orchards and u-picks are flooded right now. I actually made the butternut squash apple soup posted here last weekend 🙂 I saved the leftover leek I had on hand and simmered and froze a few pints of homemade vegetable broth.

My next plan with the apples (and pears or cranberries) is to try preserving some sort of fruit butter or jam! Aimee, your cook book and blog have completely changed the way I cook, thank you <3

  2. Perfect timing. I’m going to peruse these later when I have more time..I’m much more of an apple girl than a pumpkin girl, so this is right up my alley. Have you ever seen the cookbook, “An Apple A Day”? Literally 365 recipes with apples. I <3 it!

  3. I made an apple crisp last night, possibly some apple sauce this evening. My kids (and husband) love oatmeal topped with diced apples sauted in a little butter and brown sugar. Great list of apple recipes!
