Home for the Holidays: WhyHunger

It is an honour to share with you a charitable cause that is near and dear to my heart, as today across SLM, we spotlight six nonprofits that we think are special. (I hope you’ll take a moment to check them out!)

WhyHunger is a nonprofit organization finding practical answers to the problems of hunger and poverty by connecting people to food and by supporting grassroots organizations. Feeding the hungry? I can’t think of a better cause to embrace here on Simple Bites.

 WhyHunger finds practical answers to the problems of hunger and poverty by connecting people to food and by supporting grassroots organizations inventing new ways to build self-reliance and community power.

WhyHunger works in the U.S. and abroad (with over 8,000 grassroots organizations) to build networks of grassroots organizations that share a vision of healthy, sustainable and self-reliant communities, leading to greater mobilization and stronger advocacy to end poverty and hunger.

WhyHunger believes everyone deserves the right to good, healthy food.

A message from WhyHunger:

 “Founded in 1975 by the late musician and activist Harry Chapin & current Executive Director Bill Ayres, WhyHunger works to put an end to hunger suffered by 49 million Americans and nearly 1 billion people worldwide.

WhyHunger’s main programs include:

the National Hunger Hotline 1-866-3-HUNGRY, which refers individuals in need of emergency food assistance to soup kitchens, food banks, government nutrition programs & community organizations in their neighborhoods;

the Grassroots Action Network, which provides information, networking opportunities, capacity building & access to over 8,000 anti-hunger & poverty community organizations across the United States and around the world;

Global Movements, which link WhyHunger’s domestic work on hunger and poverty to global movements for the basic rights to food, land, water, and sustainable livelihoods for all people;

Artists Against Hunger & Poverty which is supported by Bruce Springsteen, Michael McDonald, Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, Joss Stone, Darryl DMC McDaniels, Jackson Browne, O.A.R, and many others.

For two consecutive years WhyHunger has received the highest possible rating of four out of a possible four stars for excellence in fiscal management, accountability and transparency from Charity Navigator: ninety cents of every dollar raised goes directly to programmatic work, so when you donate you can be sure we spend the money responsibly.

  1. I’d love to know more of this organization. There are so many ways to help, in whatever, however little we can afford, it all adds up. The important thing is, we recognize the need of these groups and we are willing to be a part of the solution.

  2. Giving food and making sure that the hungry receive it is a noble cause. Everyone can understand that this is top priority and I support the effort.
