The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook Giveaway

I first fell in love with the British series period drama Downton Abbey when I was some 30 weeks pregnant with Clara, back in the dark, chilly days of January. Ordered to partial bed rest by my doctor, and with bad back pain and numb arms that curbed my ability to write, I found myself prone on the sofa one evening, flipping channels. I happened upon Downton Abbey with its high tea, high hats, and high drama, and was hooked in five minutes.

Yes, we love the sister rivalries, romantic triangles and sweeping English landscapes, but Downton Abbey is also quite a show for foodies, and this summer I was not surprised to hear that a cookbook was in the works. The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook: From Lady Mary’s Crab Canapes to Mrs. Patmore’s Christmas Pudding – More Than 150 Recipes from Upstairs and Downstairs (F+W Media, September 2012) by Emily Ansara Baines (Author of The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook) will be released September 18 – today!

I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy and have had heaps of fun brushing up on my British fare. Bubble & Squeak, anyone? Look for the English Eccles Cakes recipe (pictured at top) to come this week… Now hit the jump for a chance to win one of THREE copies of the cookbook.

Bite This Book: The Vegetarian Kitchen Table Cookbook (giveaway)

Welcome to Bite This Book! Each month, I feature a cookbook of my choosing that is hot off the press, host a Q & A with the author, and then give you a chance to win a copy or two. It’s Bite This Book! good reads on Simple Bites.

If I ever made the decision to adopt a vegetarian diet, it would definitely be swayed by beautiful August produce. Who wants to eat anything else for dinner besides summer pizza heaped with grilled peppers, corn dusted with Parmesan, and tomatoes 14 ways? And dessert? Don’t get me started. Peach cobbler and blueberry galette are divine, and even a simple bowl of cherries or sliced strawberries is satisfying.

Yes, summer produce is at its peak, and if you’re looking for creative ways to serve it up, I’ve got the perfect book for you today. The Vegetarian Kitchen Table Cookbook is co-written by chef-authors Igor Brotto and Olivier Guiriec, and contains 275 incredible recipes, each beautifully showcasing a myriad of vegetables.

Reading through the chapter contents has me hungry, just listen:

  • Quinoa with Fennel and Wild Mushrooms
  • Sun-Dried Tomato, Brie & Arugula Panini
  • Potato Samosas with Spicy Mango Salasa
  • Thai Vermicelli Salad with Snow Peas & Shiitakes
  • Pumpkin Croquettes with Cheddar Cheese

I love that this cookbook also has the basics, like Hummus, Guacamole, Pesto, Tomato Sauce, and many more. And my sweet tooth is pleased with the lengthy dessert chapter!

Whether you are looking for creative ways to cut back on meat or you admittedly have a crush on vegetables, there’s a wealth of everyday inspiration to be found in the 275 recipes of The Vegetarian Kitchen Table Cookbook.

In full disclosure, Oliver is my good friend and sort-of neighbor! I’ve been fortunate enough to dine in his home many, many times, and can attest to his skills in the kitchen. We occasionally swap our farm fresh eggs for his incredible home-smoked salmon; now that is being neighborly.

Bite This Book: Ripe (giveaway)

Welcome to Bite This Book! Each month, I feature a cookbook of my choosing that is hot off the press, host a Q & A with the author, and then give you a chance to win a copy or two. It’s Bite This Book! good reads on Simple Bites.

For years I watched my mother coax homegrown fruits and vegetables out of her garden and greenhouse over our stunted, Northern Canada summers. Such a labor of love it was, fighting frost, rocky soil, and – ahem – our pesky goats, that I cultivated a deep appreciation for the produce on my plate at a tender age.

Since then, I’ve never passed a market stand of beautiful produce without thinking of the farmer, and the effort that went into getting it from seed to sale.

A similar sentiment and heartfelt acknowledgment for fruits and vegetables has been channeled into the gorgeous new cookbook Ripe: A Fresh, Colorful Approach to Fruits and Vegetables. Ripe is a collaboration between beloved food-writer Cheryl Sternman Rule of 5 Second Rule, and photographer Paulette Phlipot and what a team they make.

Organized by produce color and scripted in Cheryl’s whip-smart and entertaining voice, the book first comes across as playful and light. A deeper look, however, unveils recipes that truly honor the produce, and stunning photos that show off the fruits and vegetables’ best side. With winter produce such as cranberries and grapefruit given the same prominence as their summer counterparts, this is a book you will crack open to find inspiration no matter the season.

Not surprisingly, Ripe is in its fifth printing and was named one of the Top 10 cookbooks of Summer by NPR (National Public Radio). Fantastic!

Alice Currah is the blogger behind the beautiful Savory Sweet Life, a Seattle-based mother of three, and a friend of mine. She’s always been a huge inspiration and a mentor-of-sorts to me, demonstrating grace and professionalism in a sometimes competitive food blogging world.

Her brand new cookbook, Savory Sweet Life: 100 Simply Delicious Recipes for Every Family Occasion has been out for a little over a month and is receiving wide acclaim. I’m not surprised at all, as it feels like a perfectly natural extension from her much-loved food blog.
