Queen for a Day Giveaway 2011

This giveaway is now closed. Check back tomorrow for the winner.

Welcome to Simple Living Media’s Queen for a Day Giveaway! Today we’ve got five giveaways full of treats to celebrate the mom in your life, just in time for Mother’s Day on May 8.

A few weeks ago, in a quick question on the Simple Bites Facebook page, I asked readers what their ideal mother’s day gift would be. “Sleeping in“, “Dinner out“, and “A day off” were common answers. Some were humorous, “An escape route!“, but most moms wanted the same thing – to feel appreciated and have a bit of time to themselves.

That is why we at Simple Living Media decided on ‘Queen for a Day’ as a title for our giveaway. All moms deserve the royal treatment once in a while. I can imagine queen-to-be Kate Middleton is receiving some very special pre-wedding pampering this week. I certainly wouldn’t turn that down!

Well, we can’t swoop in and tuck a pillow under your feet and hand you fresh scones with jam, but we can all have a little giveaway fun together.

I’m very happy to be able to make the day of one fortunate reader because only one person will win everything featured in this post!

Each item has been hand selected by me and each one would make a unique, affordable gift for Mother’s Day. Let’s get to the giveaway…

Green Market Baking Book

This giveaway basket kicks off with one of my favorite new cookbooks of the 2011 spring season – the Green Market Baking Book. Illustrated beautifully by Laura C Martin, it was love at first sight for me and this exceptional cookbook. Boasting 100 recipes for naturally sweet and savory treats, the GMBB is a must for any household that is looking for an alternative to baking with refined sugar.

Recipes such as Blueberry & Corn Skillet Bread and Granola Bars have already been a hit in my home and I can’t wait try more.

Sterling Publishing is giving one copy of The Green Market Baking Book in the Simple Bites Queen for a Day gift basket!

David’s Tea: The Perfect Tea Mug and The Spring Collection tea kit

I’m proud to say that this giveaway basket features one of my favorite local products, David’s Tea. Founded in 2008 right here in Montreal by -yep- a guy named David, David’s Tea has rapidly made a name for itself and it’s no surprise why. Their premium selection of loose leaf teas are renown for tasting as good as they smell, and are rapidly winning fans to the wonderful world of tea.

The 2011 Spring Collection tea kit boasts five assorted teas with runway names like Goji Pop,  Cocomama Lime and Dreamsicle. Whether your preference is black, green, or herbal, you’ll find a new favorite in this limited edition kit.

The Spring Collection Perfect Tea Mug comes with an infuser and lid for brewing the perfect cup of tea anywhere, anytime. I’ve become extremely attached to my slender mug with the bird on the side and have bumped this item to the top of my ‘great gift idea’ list.

David’s Tea is offering one Spring Collection Perfect Tea Mug and one 2011 Spring Collection tea kit in the Simple Bites Queen for a Day gift basket!

Organized Simplicity

Organization in the kitchen comes second nature to me. The rest of the house? Not so much. Fortunately, Tsh’s exceptional book, Organized Simplicity, has helped me tackle my home fearlessly and organize even the most troublesome areas.

Organized Simplicity’s clutter-free approach to intentional living will have you transform your home into a haven in just ten days. I can’t think of a better way to welcome Spring, can you?

Fine Art Print from This Paper Ship

At This Paper Ship, a husband and wife design, illustration, and photography team show a passion for whimsy with their hand-drawn type prints. Featuring candy colors and playful designs, This Paper Ships’ original ink illustrations come printed on environmental French paper using high quality archival inks.

With delightful prints that change frequently, it was hard to choose a little piece of This Paper Ship of my own. But I did, and I smile every time I see it in my kitchen; Joy of Cooking (**no longer available) has a lot of sentimental value to me.

This Paper Ship is offering readers a 15% discount off of any item in their Big Cartel shop by using the code ‘simplebites‘. Discount is valid up to Mother’s Day, May 8, 2011.

The Reluctant Entertainer

Two pages into Sandy Coughlin’s guide to simple and gracious hospitality and I was nodding my head and saying ‘Yeah’ out loud. A quick flip through The Reluctant Entertainer turned up a goldmine of both encouragement and information, and the section about ‘Hospitality on Wheels’ (a subject dear to my heart) sold me completely. I sank into the sofa, grabbed a nearly quilt and read the book cover to cover.

The Reluctant Entertainer is a practical guide to gracious hospitality. On the practical side it offers recipes (tried and true, of course), simple decorating tips, and whip-smart ideas for getting your dinner conversation to sparkle.

On a more serious note, Sandy encourages us to give up on perfect (The house! The kids! The food!) and embrace graciousness with one another. True hospitality? I think we could all use a pinch.

Two New West Knifeworks Kitchen Knives

One hundred-percent American-made with a high-carbon steel steel blade and a unique hand-crafted colored hardwood veneer handles, the Fusionwood kitchen knives are as beautiful as they are practical.

A good pairing knife is essential to any cook, and this pairing knife from New West Knifeworks is the top of the line. Featuring a three-inch blade and a comfortable, sturdy handle, it is a fantastic all-purpose knife for the home. I also have a feeling this tool is going to be my new favorite picnic knife!

Another knife which works well as a chef’s knife for smaller hands is the Mini Chopper Chef Knife. With a four-inch blade, it takes on almost any kitchen task with gusto, and makes a very attractive addition to your cheese plate. Mine often come with me when I travel, in their handy sheaths; you never know when or where you’ll need a decent knife.

Steady Days

Perhaps the most relevant item to this Mother’s Day giveaway is Jamie Martin’s Steady Days. With the tagline, “A Journey Toward Intentional, Professional Motherhood”, Steady Days indeed takes us mothers by the hand and encourages us to be the best we can be in the most important position of our lives – motherhood.

Both practical (includes tools for learning together with your children) and inspirational , Steady Days is a must read for mothers who daily manage the complexities of modern parenting. You will finish it feeling motivated, encouraged and blessed beyond words to be a mother.

Eat your Greens Tote

Last but not least is a very special handmade tote from Etsy shop, Bag Full of Posies. The very talented Kellie (also of This Blessed Nest) designs and makes vintage and custom market bags.

Did you hear that part about custom? A personalized tote is both a thoughtful and practical gift. And you thought you couldn’t give it all for Mother’s Day!

The bags are 100% natural jute (natural fiber, similar to burlap), lined with a clear protective coating inside, and perfect for shopping trips, diaper bags or beach outings. They hold a ton, which is ideal for me, because I like to stock up at the market.

I was torn between the Eat Your Greens tote featured here and this adorable young sow that is so cheerfully headed to market. Can you imagine a better bag for your farmer’s market purchases this summer?

Bag Full of Posies is offering readers a 15% discount off of any item in their Etsy shop using the discount code ‘SIMPLELIVING’. Discount code is valid up until Mother’s Day, May 8, 2011.

  1. The thing I love the most about my Mom is her strength. She went through some tough times when we were younger and basically raised us as a single parent, but she never let her hurt or modest income get in the way of loving us and giving us a wonderful childhood. Now that I have children I appreciate all she did for us back then so much more!

  2. I love that my grandmother is able to see and have a relationship with her great-grandchildren. She is a lovely woman!

  3. Aunt LoLo says:

Oh…my mother rocks my world. She lives just a few minutes from us, and comes over every Friday night to watch my two under-fives while hubs and I sneak out for a date and uninterrupted conversation. Oh, and kids (of course!) adore her…because they do nothing but watch cartoons, play games, eat noodles…and all the sweets they can find. heh. But it’s worth it!

  6. One of my favorite moms is my friend Lisa. She is an advocate for recess in public schools and is working tirelessly to get more recess time added back into our local schools. All this and her daughters are not even enrolled in public school yet! I really admire her convictions and determination.

  7. I like you on Facebook :)

  8. I have tweeted about the giveaway also. Thanks for such a great basket of goodies. Fingers crossed.

  9. Diane L. says:

What I appreciated most about my mom was her willingness to listen. When I moved away from home, we would talk on the phone every Saturday (in the days before cell phones), and she would patiently listen as I rambled on about everything that was going on in my life. I have really missed those phone calls since she passed away several years ago.

  10. I like that my mom still knows how to take care of me.

  11. I like you on facebook.

  12. Sara Suastez says:

I admire my mom for her reliance on God for strength when we were younger and my dad left.

  14. My Grandmother was my hero. She was the epitome of unconditional love. I always felt that I could stretch my wings and if I made a mistake, that would be okay. She was my best friend, someone that I could talk to about anything. I really miss not having her in my life anymore, but I know that she is always looking down on me and sending that quiet positive encouragement.

  15. I Like you on Face Book.

  16. I already follow you on Twitter and Tweeted about the giveaway:

  17. As an imperfect parent, I love that I can learn from so many women who have blazed the trails of motherhood before me (especially my mother and my mother-in-law) and hopefully learn to be a little better and a little stronger because of them.

  18. One thing I love about my mom is that she is my best friend (after my husband, of course!). She is always there for me when I need her, even though the miles separate us.

  19. I “like” you on FB :)

  20. Ever since my mom passed away my mother-in-law has taken over at being a great substitute mom. I know she will never take the place of my mother, but she has been very attentive and helpful with her grandchildren and me. I know I can count on her for anything.
Rana’s last post: I made an omeletIn a bag!

  21. I love the way my mom knows just how to care for me when I am sick — the exact food and drink I need, keeping up with the chores in just the way I would. I guess that is why when I am ill or right after I give birth, I just want my mom to come take care of me. No one else can do it right :)

  22. ikkinlala says:

May Canadians enter? One thing I love about my mom is her willingness to try new things.

  23. I’m thankful for my grandmother and her strong, dedicated personality. Both to my grandfather and to us. It’s so fun to see her fully enjoy being great-grandma to my son, too!

Thank you for this kind opportunity.

  30. Ashley F. says:

A great Mom in my life once told me that even as a Mom, you need to take time to date your husband. I took her advice and even though we have 5 crazy little ones, my husband and I still take time out each week and have date night. We don’t usually go out, so the kids know on date night they get to pick out a movie and have a mini sleepover while we have our date. We also do a coffee time on weekend mornings where we get to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and silence in the morning. It has been some of the best advice we have ever gotten. I love smart friends!

  31. I love my mother-in-law because she is always a great listener and also loves to tell her fun stories about her growing up. She now has the last stages of cancer and love spending time with her. It is sad to see someone you love suffer, but she is such a great trouper.

  32. Rebecca R says:

My Mum is one of the most peaceful women I’ve ever known…I always am striving to be like her.

I love my mom’s lifelong love of learning. She is always reading a book, taking a class, trying something new. She is never bored or boring- there is always something new to learn or try. It is inspiring to me.

I love that my Tarpon mom is my encourager and prayer warrior.

  44. I was very fortunate to have close relationship with my maternal grandmother. My grandparents moved across the United States to be closer to my family when I was eight. Although she was a very stoic German woman who did not always show a lot of affection, I never doubted her love. Her family came first, and I will never forget that.

  45. I love how my grandmother’s deep love of children (specifically my daughters) seeps right through her severe Alzheimer’s. Her joy and simplicity is matched only by theirs, and seeing them mingle is a delight.

  46. Michelle Gill says:

    LIKED you on facebook!!

  47. Michelle Gill says:

I love my sister’s dedication to her kids. She inspires me. She became a mother 4 yrs before I did and from day 1 i noticed how focused she was on her daughter and quick to ignore any of her own needs to make sure her daughter
