This time of the year…

Ah, springtime, the awakening season. When all green life shakes off the dream of winter and reemerges in slow splendour.

This time of the year brings about such a surplus of new topics that I have a difficult time narrowing my focus. My mind wants to goes in every direction, like the seeds on a blown dandelion puff, chasing passions of mine like gardening, entertaining, camping, canning, cocktails, seasonal ingredients and more.

This week, May comes to a close and June begins. So where do I start on today’s blank WordPress page?

Do I tell you about that double batch of ramps that I pickled the day before leaving for London? Or the rhubarb syrup I am currently straining for jelly? We could talk about preserving the season. Oh, we could just talk about pickling and have plenty of fodder for dicscussion: pickled strawberries, pickled green beans, pickled asparagus or just plain garlic pickles.

Simple Bites partnerships for 2017

When it comes to my career, I wear many hats, both online and off.

My friend Kerrie calls herself a “food creative”, and I like that title. I steal it from time to time, when I want to give a short answer to the question “So what do you do, Aimée?”. I always identify as a creative; I don’t have a natural business sense, but I make it work.

First and foremost, I’m a recipe developer and professional blogger. I also am a food stylist, photographer and cookbook author. The titles keep on coming: freelancer writer, brand ambassador, content developer and that big one, influencer.

You don’t need to understand the aforementioned terms at all (trust me, it’s pretty boring), but maybe this post will give you a better idea of what I do, aside from the day-to-day mummy/household stuff.

Presenting…The Simple Bites Kitchen cookbook

I‘ve been counting down the days to this very post: the one where I reveal the cover of my next cookbook, The Simple Bites Kitchen and share a few details about this personal project.

As of now, the edits are a wrap, the cover is confirmed and this labour of love is getting ready to go to press. We also have a set release date: October 3, 2017. That’s just six months away!

So how did this book come to be? And what is it all about anyway? Keep reading for the story, a few behind-the-scenes photos…and the cookbook’s cover reveal.

Behind the scenes of our photoshoot with Parents magazine

We started and ended the day in the yard; a team of twelve and one heck of an ambitious shoot list.

The day began slowly: we discussed our plan of action over cups of coffee while the morning sunlight warmed our backs. The day ended hastily around 4 in the afternoon, as the pitter patter of rain fell around our heads and we dashed to get everything  –food-equipment-children –out of the rain. It was an unforgettable day, for all sorts of reasons.

But let’s back up for a second. You may be wondering what is involved when booking a photoshoot and story with America’s largest parenting magazine. Did they just drop a comment one day on my Instagram and say ‘hey wanna work together?’. Uh, no. There was much more to it than that.

Here’s as much of the story as I can remember, and a bunch of iPhone photos from our homestead on that warm August day.

Happy New Year – thanks for being here

Happy New Year!

There’s snow gently drifting down outdoors and we’re all still in PJ’s even though it’s after noon. I’m frying pancake and eggs and filling everyone up before they tumble out of doors to play in the drifts.

I like this slow start to the day and I hope it’s a sign of the year to come. We certainly would embrace a calmer 2016, but it remains to be seen when the year will hold.

2016 pancakes

I wanted to say thank you for being here. It’s been a slower year for the blog, mostly because I was juggling everything that life sent my way – a book tour, a family reunion, a wedding cake, a backyard wedding party, a car accident, my husband’s kidney donation, and my sister’s surprise preemie. To name a few.

Thanks for sticking by me through it all. You are the most supportive readers, and I truly cherish every response you send my way.

I can’t wait to get back to regular blogging in 2016; I’ve missed it so much. In the next few weeks I’ve have a couple of fun announcements, so stay tuned!
