Presenting…The Simple Bites Kitchen cookbook

I‘ve been counting down the days to this very post: the one where I reveal the cover of my next cookbook, The Simple Bites Kitchen and share a few details about this personal project.

As of now, the edits are a wrap, the cover is confirmed and this labour of love is getting ready to go to press. We also have a set release date: October 3, 2017. That’s just six months away!

So how did this book come to be? And what is it all about anyway? Keep reading for the story, a few behind-the-scenes photos…and the cookbook’s cover reveal.

Behind the scenes of our photoshoot with Parents magazine

We started and ended the day in the yard; a team of twelve and one heck of an ambitious shoot list.

The day began slowly: we discussed our plan of action over cups of coffee while the morning sunlight warmed our backs. The day ended hastily around 4 in the afternoon, as the pitter patter of rain fell around our heads and we dashed to get everything  –food-equipment-children –out of the rain. It was an unforgettable day, for all sorts of reasons.

But let’s back up for a second. You may be wondering what is involved when booking a photoshoot and story with America’s largest parenting magazine. Did they just drop a comment one day on my Instagram and say ‘hey wanna work together?’. Uh, no. There was much more to it than that.

Here’s as much of the story as I can remember, and a bunch of iPhone photos from our homestead on that warm August day.

Happy New Year – thanks for being here

Happy New Year!

There’s snow gently drifting down outdoors and we’re all still in PJ’s even though it’s after noon. I’m frying pancake and eggs and filling everyone up before they tumble out of doors to play in the drifts.

I like this slow start to the day and I hope it’s a sign of the year to come. We certainly would embrace a calmer 2016, but it remains to be seen when the year will hold.

2016 pancakes

I wanted to say thank you for being here. It’s been a slower year for the blog, mostly because I was juggling everything that life sent my way – a book tour, a family reunion, a wedding cake, a backyard wedding party, a car accident, my husband’s kidney donation, and my sister’s surprise preemie. To name a few.

Thanks for sticking by me through it all. You are the most supportive readers, and I truly cherish every response you send my way.

I can’t wait to get back to regular blogging in 2016; I’ve missed it so much. In the next few weeks I’ve have a couple of fun announcements, so stay tuned!

A book tour of sorts: the (very long) recap

This post is a series of stories from my recent book tour, strung together as a nod to World Storytelling Day. I told my story to many people and was so grateful for the opportunity. The storytelling theme for 2015 is “Wishes”, and on this journey I wasn’t wishing for anything or to be anywhere else.

I had two telephone interviews scheduled for the day after we got back from our road trip. The second one was right after dinner, and I had crashed on the sofa to take the call, worn out from trying to catch up with a week of laundry, emails and general household upkeep.

We chatted for a bit, then launched right into the questions. The funny thing was, after 30 minutes, I didn’t remember that I had felt tired; I was standing, waving my arms, and gesturing to no one in particular. “You sound so excited about this cookbook” my interviewer noted. “Aren’t you tired of promoting it?”

Apparently not. I only hope you aren’t tired of hearing about it! BEJJ (“Bedge” as we affectionately call it in my home) is about the most exciting event to happen around here since Clara’s arrival three years ago. The book is an extension of our family and the past month has been spent promoting it from coast to coast. Here’s a glimpse of that book tour…

Brown Eggs & Jam Jars cookbook cover reveal!

Dear readers. If you forgot about that cookbook I told you over sixteen months ago that I was writing, I wouldn’t blame you one bit.

I imagine it has felt like radio silence since the announcement from your perspective, but believe me when I say I’ve been steadily pouring my heart and soul into the recipes, tutorials, sidebars, essays, headnotes, photographs and cover of Brown Eggs and Jam Jars. At this point there are decisions made nearly every day, heaps of emails, final edits galore, and lists like you wouldn’t believe.

I can’t wait to share the book with you. We have a release date: February 10, 2015. February could use a little something special, don’t you think? It’s a dark, cold month here in Montreal; an ideal time to warm up the kitchen with something new and inspiring.

For now though, I am so very excited to reveal my first cookbook cover.
