Welcome to a new 2012 series on Simple Bites! Each month, I’ll feature a book of my choosing (cookbooks, predominantly) that is hot off the press, host a Q & A with the author, and then give you a chance to win a copy. It’s Bite This Book and it starts today!

January is a month where it’s easy to get inspired to organize the kitchen. The weather outside is blustery and cold (at least up here it is), the holiday parties are over, and routine is reinstated in our households.

It makes sense to tackle organizing projects now – big or small – and today I have just the book to help you on your way. Written by my friends and fellow mothers, Mandi Ehman and Tara Kuczykowski, All In Good Time: When to Save, Stock Up, and Schedule Everything for Your Home is a thorough resource for busy families looking for ways to cut costs, save time, and get the home in order.

Nope, it’s not a cookbook, but All in Good Time is definitely a book that I can see being very valuable to Simple Bites readers. Read on for an interview with Mandi and a chance to win one of two copies!

Q & A with Mandi Ehman

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you are qualified to write this book.

Mandi:

Tara and I first became friends about 7 years ago. We were both work-at-home moms, and we actually met online through a company bulletin board. We both had baby girls (although Tara also had two little boys as well), and we discovered that we had a lot in common.

We talked pretty much every day, and it didn’t take us long to figure out that Tara’s passion and strength was saving money and finding great deals while mine was organizing and time management.

Eventually, we both started blogs related to those passions, and when the opportunity presented itself to write this book, it seemed like a great way to combine our knowledge and skills to help other people save time and money so that they’d have more of both left for the things that really matter.

2. How would you describe All In Good Time?

It is really a reference book. Much like a cookbook, we don’t expect that many readers will sit down and read the whole thing cover to cover at one time. Rather, it’s something you can flip through to discover the best time to “save, stock up and schedule everything for your home” and pull off the shelf when you want to research a specific purchase or activity.

3. Who will All In Good Time appeal to?

Although there’s helpful information in the book for pretty much anyone, I really think it is most valuable for busy moms who are trying to balance tight budgets and busy lives. Minutes and dollars really do add up, and there are simple ways to save both!

4. What is something you learned about yourself during the book writing process?

Personally, I learned that despite now carrying the title of published author, I really don’t consider myself a writer. I discovered that I love to share information with people, but writing is a means to an end and not my passion. Certainly not what I expected to learn through the experience, but something that has helped me clarify my vision for the future in invaluable ways!

Thanks so much, Mandi, and Tara too. I’m sure your book is going to be an enormous help to so many across the continent. And how you managed to write this AND parent your nine (total) kids is truly amazing. Congratulations!

We’re back for another Home for the Holidays giveaway, and this time, the home wannabe barista (Danny) is going to introduce the last item of the week here on Simple Bites!

Aimée’s family introduced me to coffee-culture, and it is pretty much here to stay. When we hosted a family reunion for them, we went through between 3/4 lb and 1 lb of coffee each day.

To get our coffee fix, we’ve used drip machines, single serve drip, French press, a cheap espresso machine that conked out after roughly 300 shots (2 months in our home), and more recently, a robust espresso machine on loan from my brother. We can finally return that one (thanks, bro) because we will be using our latest caffeine dispensing machine for a while.

If the title of this post did not clarify what it is, here’s a thousand-word description for what we’re giving away:

Clearly, I was thrilled to learn that this espresso machine was on its way and let out a whoop at the office when Aimée texted me the pic of the box on our living room floor. She had to ask the courier to push it into the house, as it is a fairly hefty machine. Since it was my Christmas gift, she didn’t open the package with the kids, and instead made them wait for me to get home. After a few deft strokes with my car keys on the tape, the kids were left to play with the boxes, and I got to play with the machine.

After washing the required parts that come in contact with the water, and giving the whole thing a wipe-down, I got down to the business of figuring out how to pull a decent espresso. It was easy. In fact, the espresso mahine warms up in under a minute (45 seconds as per the manual).

I found that the Breville Express easily grinds twice as fine and 3 times more consistently than the 10-year-old unit that we have been using – or as I now see it: tolerating. It is night-and-day upgrade. After a few adjustments for the grind and quantity of coffee dispensed, I have gotten a thick crema every time I’ve used it.

The coffee extraction is pre-programmed for single and double shots, but can be customized to more or less water, if you want to ‘play’ barista like me. Once you switch on the steam, it takes a few seconds to boil the water, and then you get a consistent supply of hot steam to warm/froth your milk.

Included in the box is a portafilter with 2 sets of coffee baskets: a single and double shot basket for beginners (the “set it and forget it” crowd) and one for people like me who want to play a bit more. There is also a milk pitcher, a frothing help device and a tamp that magnetizes right into the machine, so it doesn’t roll around your counter and/or you have a free hand to give a necessary morning juice cup to your kids.

Like most Breville appliances, this one looks like it can and will launch into space soon, and looks fabulous on our counter. You’re probably going to want to go ahead and ‘Like’ Breville on Facebook to keep up with promotions and products!

Allow me to let you in on a little secret: I have never owned a food processor for home use, until now. A host of my kitchen tasks are now simplified thanks to the 14-cup Magimix food processor that resides on my counter. It out-performs my highest expectations, cleans in a snap and I’m happy to say it will be around for the long haul. A good thing, as my family is growing.

Some of my favorite features of the Magimix include its powerful (950W), extra-quiet motor that I’ve seen be put to the test in commercial kitchens, and the trio of work bowls that allows you to carry out multiple tasks in rapid succession, without stopping to wash a bowl.

The small bowl (mini) is perfect for mincing herbs for pesto, creaming a nut butter, or making mayonnaise.
The medium bowl (midi) is ideal for slicing vegetables and grating cheese.
The large bowl (main) handles big prep jobs like kneading dough, slicing a large batch of vegetables, and liquefying soups.

I recently turned an entire 10-lb bag of onions into my French Onion Soup base. The bulk of the task – slicing the onions – was done in just two batches in the Magimix thanks to its large bowl, a razor-sharp Sabatier stainless-steel slicing blade, and the extra-large feed tube that eliminated the need to do more than halve the onions.

My favorite attachment so far is the Food Processor Juice Extractor & Smoothie Attachment. It’s an absolute beast when it comes to turning pounds and pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables into colorful juices. My boys and I are obsessed!

Oh, la la. I have to say I can’t wait to make baby food with the Mash and Puree Kit.

On the 24th I sent out a tweet commenting that in exactly two months it would be Christmas Eve. Instantly about thirty @ replies jumped into my feed, nearly all of them exclamations of horror. Most of the freakout factor was based around the amount of shopping that needed to be done before the big day.

Here’s my secret for holiday shopping – I do it online. In my bathrobe and fuzzy slippers, with a cup of cocoa. I stay far away from hectic malls, line-ups, snowy roads, and parking vying. I scope out a few shops ahead of time (like now) because I like to feel the material of clothes or read the back cover of a book, but most of my final purchases are made online.

Some of my favorite gifts for kids come from a local store with the unforgettable name of Mortimer Snodgrass; I could easily get something for everyone on my list there. Fortunately for non-locals, Montreal’s funkiest gift store also has a flourishing, easy to navigate online shop that ships worldwide.

Around the Table

Would you believe that every morning there used to be a squabble over our everyday colored plastic dishes? (They both wanted what the color the other brother had.) Two of these practical and cheery Zoo plates have since silenced those quarrels, as the boys now have ‘personalized’ plates, Owl for Noah, and Monkey for Mateo.

I love that the Zoo plates are big enough to spread dinner around to help it cool faster, but have edges to prevent spillage. I do wish they were dishwasher safe, but since we use them at every meal, they’d hardly get a chance to sit in the dishwasher.

Playroom Décor

With hardwood floors stretching from end to end of our home, our Playspots foam tiles provide a colorful and soft landing pad for my busy boys. I love their soft colors (no fluorescents!) and modern look, while the kids enjoy playing around with all the patterns that can be made with the different shapes and colors.

I have a feeling the Playspot mat is going to be invaluable when our new little addition comes along, too. The boys are going to have to share with their sister!

As our playroom is on the main floor, it’s important for me to keep the mess to a minimum. A pair of spacious and sturdy storage boxes from Mortimer Snodgrass help contain the toys as well as add a major cute factor to the room. If only keeping the rest of the house clean was so easy!

Many people do not know that the flat metal lids that come in a box of jars are good for one batch of preserves and then should be discarded. Standard lids are recyclable, but with Tattler lids, I can reuse year after year and they’re a recyclable product.

Plus, Tattler reusable canning lids can be used with all the same methods of food preservation that you would use a traditional lid such as a pressure canner, water bath, and pickling.

I learned recently that the standard flat metal canning lids contain Bisphenol-A. It was disheartening to think that in my efforts to remove BPA from my families food, my home canning projects were still tainted.

I use a combination of Tattler lids and regular lids for my canning projects. I make a lot of jam to swap with others or give as gifts and am not parting with my reusable canning lids, so the preserves with Tattler lids are for my own use and the others are to give away.
