An Intro to Our Late-Summer Canning Series (vlog)

Okay, so it is fair to say that a certain recent announcement has slowed my canning efforts. I was all set for the season, I had my act together – or so I thought.

Now the exhaustion of a first trimester pregnancy has caught up with me and seems to fill my day with tiredness before it has even started. Getting through a routinely busy week is enough of a challenge without adding a canning project.

Life tends to turn our plans upside down, but we’re so happy about this baby, I can’t bemoan lost canning projects for a second. Instead, my original list of ‘must haves‘ has shrunk considerably and I’m hoping to have more energy in the fall to play catch-up on a few more items.

That said, I’ve called upon some of my favorite domestic goddesses to help me put together this canning series – because there was no way it was all coming out of my own kitchen! Luckily, Shaina, Megan and Marisa all agreed to contribute, despite their busy summers. Thanks girls!

Recently at Big Summer Potluck, I had the opportunity to chat with all three girls about canning. Good sports that they are, they agreed to let me film them for a fun little vlog.

I hope you enjoy it!

Coming up this week, we’ll have a post a day featuring a new canning recipe. You won’t want to miss it!

Your turn: What is your favorite part of the canning process?

  1. I’m with Shaina on this one – the whole process is satisfying. Knowing that YOU did that – you put that food up on your shelf so you could eat it without global impact during the off season months, it’s incredibly satisfying.

  2. There’s no favorite part – I hate it! I do a lot of it though as we are on a farm and homemade obviously tastes a lot better. I freeze all I reasonably can (veggies, fruits, jams, etc) vs. canning, reserving canning proper for things that simply can’t be frozen – pickles and tomatoes. I am much more happy working with meats.

      1. It’s the monotony of it. I’ll tell you what though – it is best accomplished (for me) during the second trimester – no way I could do it during the first!

  3. I really love the the whole process but there is something about sitting in my kitchen listening to the pots gurgling away that is so satisfying. Can’t wait for the series!

  4. Fun vlog! My favorite part is the picking (in the case of apples, berries, cherries, etc.) and then the eating! I’ve failed pretty bad this summer, Aimee. I have yet to can anything…and I was planning to do tomatoes (and sauces) and then cucumber pickles. Life has just become so busy with our new puppy. Luckily, both are still in season, so I may be able to follow up with my goals after all.

    1. Congratulations on a new puppy! Yes, there is still plenty of time. I don’t usually can tomatoes until September anyway. Hopefully my energy will be back up then.

  5. I must’ve missed the pregnancy announcement…congrats!

Really wanna start doing some canning and preserving of my own. Looks like I have some more people to follow and learn from!

  6. For years I’ve got a real thrill out of canning concord grape juice. Every time I go to the super market and see the cost of premium commercial grape juice it gives me a huge smile over and over again knowing I can reach into my pantry and pull out a quart of the bestest grape juice ever.

  7. My daughter just made me a grandpa, and I remember her talking about being so tired the last couple months. It’s not easy, but it’s a lifetime reward. Kids are a blessing, no matter how trying they are at times.

I kinda miss raising kids, but I do definitely miss canning.

  8. I love love love canning. If I had to pick just one favorite part it would have to be the little ping noises of the jars sealing. 😀 So far this year I’ve done chutney, peach raspberry jam, lots of peach salsa, and a small batch of praline sauce (just because I couldn’t wait for produce to can). I’m still planning to do dilly beans, salsa, and a boatload of tomatoes.

  9. By far, I LOVE the cans sitting on the counter going “pop”! I cheer every time I hear one. As I cheer my kids are like “What’s happened? What’s going on?”

The “pop” or “ping” as some people describe it, is the sound of SUCCESS. 🙂

Congratulations on expecting again. 🙂 Children are a blessing from the Lord.

  10. Love the video! I agree with Shaina; the whole process is so satisfying…from the “ping” of the lids to enjoying fresh-picked strawberries in the middle of winter!
